William Carla, aka Willow,
I work across multiple media; drawing, painting, pottery, glass work, sculpture, murals and costume design to create surreal imagery that explores the duality of existence. Using materials that range from pencil and charcoal to metal, fabric, and found natural elements, I construct pieces that shift between the delicacy and monumentality, from intimate studies to large-scale wall murals.
My work investigates the tension between beauty and horror, tenderness and cruelty. I am fascinated by the way something exquisite can also feel unsettling, and how darkness can contain its own form of grace. Through layered detail and metaphor, I merge opposing forces to create visual balance, inviting viewers into an emotional experience that is both immersive and introspective.
Nature, particularly the ocean, deeply influences my imagery. Having grown up near Sandpoint, Idaho I developed a profound connection to the natural world, which continues to shape my visual language. Organic forms, marine elements, and environmental textures frequently surface in my compositions, serving as both inspiration and symbolism.
I began making art as a child, using sketchbooks as a refuge from chaos. What began as escape has evolved into exploration. Today, I pursue new techniques and materials as a way to better express complex emotional states and layered narratives. My recent and upcoming mural commissions mark an exciting expansion of my practice into public spaces, where I can create immersive environments that engage broader audiences.
